What is Medicare and who qualifies?
Started in 1965, Medicare is a popular federal health plan that provides individuals with insurance at retirement age, a time when medical costs often increase. Medicare is available for people age 65 or older, younger people with disabilities, and people with End Stage Renal Disease.
When is open enrollment for Medicare?
Open enrollment is typically from October 15 to December 7 each year. Qualifying individuals can also enroll up to three months before turning 65.
What are the types of Medicare coverage?
Medicare coverage is broken up into several parts.

Original Medicare has two parts, Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventative services).

Medicare Advantage, or Part C, is a type of plan that’s offered by a private company. Part C plans may include benefits that aren’t offered by Original Medicare, or combine different benefits from Parts A, B, and D.

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage. You can get Part D as a standalone plan or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Supplement plans, also known as Medigap insurance, cover items that Original Medicare doesn’t (i.e., deductibles, copays, and coinsurance).
